CASA Inc.'s ABUSE INTERVENTION PROGRAM
- A 28-week discussion-based group program that educates individuals on healthy alternatives to using control and abuse in relationships.
- A program certified by the Maryland Governor’s office to provide court mandated treatment for those with charges of domestic violence.
- STREAMS runs on the belief that everyone has experienced trauma loss and pain in their lives. While participants are not responsible for the cause of their trauma, they are responsible for how that trauma is handled and the prevention of passing that trauma onto others.
- A mental health diagnosis or treatment- anyone seeking mental health assistance should contact a trained mental health professional.
- Anger management- abuse is about exerting control over a partner, it is not an expression of anger.
- A punishment- STREAMS is behavioral treatment that seeks to end current abusive actions and prevent future ones.
STREAMS believes that safety goes beyond physical safety. Participants learn how open and honest communication, showing emotional vulnerability, establishing financial security, and prioritizing other’s physical wellbeing builds safety. Group discussions focus on acknowledging the way participants actions and behaviors have violated the safety of others and how to avoid those actions in the future.
Trusting is always a choice and cannot be forced. STREAMS emphasizes that trust is earned through trustworthy behavior and not commanded from others. Becoming trustworthy is a long-term project that includes helping others feel safe, accepting accountability for personal decisions, and understanding the impact of words and actions on others.
STREAMS accepts that showing respect reflects one’s character and is not given or withheld based on the actions of another person and whether that respect was earned. Participants learn to always show respect to others and avoid commanding respect within relationships.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. STREAMS understands that examining behavior leads to understanding beliefs. When individuals are able to look at another’s actions and behaviors with empathy, communication and conflict resolution can occur in a more effective manner.
Accountability:
Being accountable means identifying one’s choices, being honest about the impact, and learning from those choices. Participants learn that they cannot control the world or people around them, things will happen that they would not have chosen, and that accountability involves how they choose to react and respond. Groups discuss how choices, good and bad, lead to the life they are living now and how the ability for change lies in making different choices.
Messages:
Communication is a complex system. STREAMS groups analyze all levels of communication and how this can affect relationships. Through understanding both the intended and unintended messages that occur in communication, participants can have a better understanding of partners reactions.
Stress:
Chronic stress has been linked to serious mental and physical health issues. Participants discuss common causes of stress, how to lessen and manage stress, and how to respond to the body’s physical reaction to stress.
